SECRETARY RUBIO on IRAN: Iran poses a very great threat to the United States, and has for a very long time.

They are not enriching uranium at this time, but they are attempting to reach a point where they ultimately can.

The President made clear last night that he always prefers diplomacy.

However, it is important for everyone to understand that Iran poses a very serious threat to the United States and has done so for many years.

Following the destruction of their nuclear program, Iran was instructed not to attempt to restart it.

Yet, there are continued efforts to rebuild elements of that program.

While they are not currently enriching, they are seeking to regain that capability.

In addition, Iran possesses a significant arsenal of ballistic missiles, particularly short-range ballistic missiles that threaten the United States, U.S. bases in the region, and regional partners.

This includes U.S. bases in the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Bahrain.

Iran also maintains naval assets that threaten shipping and pose risks to the U.S. Navy.

Beyond the nuclear program, Iran’s conventional weapons capabilities are designed to target the United States and American personnel, should it choose to do so.

These issues must be addressed.

The negotiations and talks scheduled for tomorrow will focus primarily on the nuclear program.

The President’s preference is to achieve progress through diplomatic channels.

However, Iran continues to refuse to engage in discussions regarding its ballistic missile program with the United States or with any other party, and that remains a significant concern.
