A 43-year-old former U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia was discovered unresponsive, prompting an investigation to ascertain the cause and manner of death.
Jessica D. Aber, a former U.S. attorney at 43, was discovered deceased at her Virginia home on Saturday morning.
Aber held the position of U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia from 2021 to 2025, having been appointed by former President
Joe Biden.
She stepped down from her role on January 20. The Alexandria Police Department responded to a call regarding an unresponsive woman shortly after 9:18 am that Saturday, confirming Aber's death.
An investigation is currently in progress to ascertain the circumstances of her passing, with the Virginia Office of the Chief Medical Examiner tasked with determining the cause and manner of death.
During her service, Aber oversaw a team of about 300 prosecutors, civil litigators, and support staff across four locations: Alexandria, Richmond, Norfolk, and Newport News.
She earned her degree from William & Mary Law School in 2006. Following her resignation, Aber remarked that her role as a U.S. attorney was 'an honor beyond measure.' Her successor, U.S. Attorney Erik S. Siebert, praised Aber as 'unmatched as a leader, mentor, and prosecutor,' adding that she was 'simply irreplaceable as a human being.' Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances of Aber's death.
