Police say a man from Federal Way was detained after investigators tracked a vehicle linked to the attack that followed an argument outside a downtown business
A man from Washington state has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a shooting in downtown San Jose during Super Bowl weekend left six people injured, authorities said.
Investigators say the suspect, identified as a resident of Federal Way, Washington, was taken into custody after police traced a vehicle connected to the incident using automated license-plate reader technology.
Detectives obtained an arrest warrant and coordinated with federal authorities and local police in Washington state before making the arrest at the suspect’s home more than a month after the shooting.
The violence occurred on the night of February eight in the busy downtown area of San Jose, which had been hosting large crowds for Super Bowl festivities.
Police said the shooting followed an altercation between two groups outside a local business.
Gunfire erupted during the confrontation, leaving six adults with gunshot wounds.
Emergency responders transported several victims to nearby hospitals while others received treatment at the scene or sought medical care independently.
Authorities said the injuries were not considered life-threatening.
Following the incident, the suspect allegedly fled the area, prompting an investigation led by the San Jose Police Department’s Gang Investigations Unit.
Detectives analyzed surveillance footage and license-plate data to identify a vehicle linked to the shooting, which ultimately led them to the suspect’s residence in Washington state.
Law enforcement officers recovered a firearm believed to have been used in the attack during a search of the suspect’s home.
The man was booked into the King County Jail and is expected to be extradited to Santa Clara County in California to face attempted murder charges.
City officials said the arrest demonstrates the ability of investigators to track suspects across state lines and bring them into custody.
Authorities emphasized that anyone who threatens public safety during major public events will face swift accountability.
The shooting occurred during a weekend when San Jose hosted thousands of visitors for Super Bowl celebrations and related events.
Police described the incident as isolated and said the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the altercation remains ongoing.
