An 8.7‑magnitude earthquake off Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula prompted a tsunami watch for coastal areas of Washington and Oregon, with officials urging residents to stay alert along low-lying shorelines.

The alert followed a series of intense tremors, including a 7.4‑magnitude quake, that rattled the region and briefly triggered warnings for parts of Russia, Japan and Hawaii before being lifted as the threat passed.

No casualties or damage have been reported so far.
