Minnesota Lawmakers Injured in Targeted Shootings; Suspect Impersonated Police Officer

State Senator John Hoffman and Representative Melissa Hortman wounded in separate home attacks; statewide manhunt underway
On June 14, 2025, Minnesota state legislators Senator John Hoffman and Representative Melissa Hortman were shot and injured in separate incidents at their homes in Champlin and Brooklyn Park, respectively.

Both lawmakers, along with their spouses, sustained multiple gunshot wounds and were transported to local hospitals.

Their current conditions have not been officially disclosed.

The shootings occurred in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Authorities have identified the suspect as a white male with brown hair, wearing black body armor over a blue shirt and blue pants.

The individual is believed to be impersonating a police officer and is considered armed and dangerous.

A shelter-in-place order was issued for a three-mile radius around the Edinburgh Golf Course in Brooklyn Park as law enforcement agencies, including the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office and Brooklyn Park Police Department, continue their search.

Governor Tim Walz has activated the State Emergency Operations Center to coordinate the response and provide support to local law enforcement.

Residents in the affected areas have been advised not to approach individuals claiming to be law enforcement officers unless they are accompanied by another officer, and to verify their identities by calling 911.

Senator John Hoffman has represented Minnesota's 34th District since 2013 and resides in Champlin with his wife, Yvette, and their child.

Representative Melissa Hortman has served in the Minnesota House of Representatives since 2005, representing District 34B, which includes parts of Brooklyn Park.

She resides in Brooklyn Park with her husband, Mark, and their two children.

Investigations are ongoing, and a press conference is scheduled to provide further updates on the situation.
