Rep. Gregory Meeks criticizes President Trump's actions against Harvard University, comparing them to tactics employed by authoritarian leaders.
Rep. Gregory Meeks (D-N.Y.), the ranking member on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, has accused President
Donald Trump of mirroring the tactics of authoritarian leaders, particularly Russian President Vladimir Putin, through his recent actions against Harvard University.
In an interview, Meeks asserted that Trump’s actions are an attempt to damage institutions that he perceives to be opposed to his administration.
Meeks stated, 'He wants to follow the model of Vladimir Putin,' suggesting that Trump's maneuvers signify an effort to undermine foundational American institutions.
He elaborated, saying, 'He wants us to be similar to that,' indicating his concern over the implications for democracy and governance in the U.S.
The controversy arises in the context of Trump’s intensified scrutiny of Harvard, where he has cancelled federal contracts and threatened the university’s ability to enroll international students.
The administration has also initiated investigations into the institution and called into question its tax-exempt status.
Ongoing legal disputes between the university and the Trump administration have further complicated the relationship.
Trump has leveled accusations against Harvard, claiming that the institution promotes discrimination and antisemitism.
In a recent post on Truth Social, he described Harvard as 'an Anti-Semitic, Far Left Institution,' alleging that it admits students who seek to undermine the country.
He characterized the situation at Harvard as a 'Liberal mess,' criticizing the presence of what he called 'crazed lunatics' who 'spew fake ANGER AND HATE.'
Meeks countered Trump’s assertions, saying, 'This is about retribution' and emphasizing the broader implications of Trump’s actions as they target individuals and institutions he perceives as adversaries.
He argued that universities like Harvard play an essential role in enhancing the U.S. through scholarly contributions and research, stating, 'That’s what we should be about.'
Additionally, Trump has recently expressed increasing hostility towards Putin and the ongoing war in Ukraine, a shift from the previously amicable relationship he maintained with the Russian leader.
In a Truth Social post, Trump suggested that his administration had averted 'really bad things' for Russia, implying a strong stance in light of recent developments in the conflict.
Meeks has proposed new legislation aimed at imposing additional sanctions on Russia in response to its actions in Ukraine.
He remarked that 'there is no pressure on Russia at all,' calling for the U.S. Congress to take decisive action and expressing concerns that Putin has been allowed to 'buy time' with minimal U.S. response.
The ongoing tensions between Trump’s administration and institutions like Harvard, as well as the broader geopolitical issues surrounding Russia, continue to unfold amidst a complex landscape of U.S. foreign and domestic policy.
